How to Attach a Yella Ribbon Bow

Yella Ribbon Cheer Bows Instructions

How do they do that? How is it that some cheerleaders have perfect ponytails and their cheer bows never move, even through a level 5 routine? How do they keep their hair bows from looking like they are "upside down" on their heads? We have the answers. This is for you, Yella Ribbon Cheer Bows customers:

Materials needed: Comb, brush, ponytail holders (We recommend Scunci regular and no slip), bobbi pins and/or snap clips, aerosol hair spray, molding wax.

Jaycie has her hair layered for cheerleading ponytails. Her hair is angled around her face and layered in the back. When we put her hair in her ponytail it is all one length instead of the top part being longer than the bottom part. You can see the angled cut in the picture.

The biggest mistake people make in this process is thinking that they can pull the hair up and use the ponytail holder attached to the hair bow to hold the hair. The ponytail holder attached to the cheer bow is to hold the hair bow, not the hair. You really have to put the hair up in at least two ponytail holders before putting in the cheer bow for it to work properly.

We start with a molding wax to smooth back flyaways along the hairline. We recommend Got2B wax.

Next we put hairspray along the hairline and comb the hair into a high ponytail. We recommend Tresemme or a very strong aerosol hair spray. At this point don't worry about the hair having "bumps." You are going to comb those out in the next few steps. Use one ponytail holder for this step. IMPORTANT: The ponytail should be directly on top of head, not in the back of the head. Jaycie's ponytail in the picture is about as far back as it can be and the cheer bow still look good. It it important that it is on top of the head. Depending on the size of the cheerleader it should be from four to five inches from the hairline.

Next you will use hair spray in sections around the ponytail. Spray one section and comb out all the "bumps" toward the ponytail holder. Spray another section and comb our the bumps in that section. Keep repeating this step until all the bumps are smoothed out. The section closest to the ponytail holder will look really "messy" at this point. Don't worry, you are going to remedy this problem in the next step.

Take out the ponytail holder while holding the ponytail in the same position. Use a brush to "smooth" out only the part closest to the ponytail holder. Don't brush through the parts you sprayed in the last step. Keep the brush close to the ponytail and away from the hairline in this step.

Put the original ponytail holder back in and add a second ponytail holder to the hair at this time. We use a regular scunci for the first holder and a scunci no slip for the second. If she has really thick hair you will want to use as many as three or four ponytail holders before putting in the cheer bow.

Use hair spray and bobbi pins and/or snap clips to pin down any flyaways that are underneath and around the sides.

Attach the ponytail holder with the bow underneath the other ponytail holders. If you find that it is still loose after you have wrapped it several times, there are some alternative ways to attach the cheerleading bow. In the picture below we are attaching the hair bow by wrapping the ponytail holder in the usual way.

For the layout cheer bow we have cut the elastic and will tie it around the ponytail as tightly as possible. We have found that this is the best way to keep the hair bow from sliding during the routine. After Jaycie is done with her performance, we slide the cheer bow out and untie the elastic. If it is really tight, we slide a bobbi pin into the knot to loosen it.

Another option with Yella Ribbon Cheer Bows is the ribbon tie in. Here we have a cheer bow with both a ponytail holder attachment and a ribbon tie in.

We follow the instructions above, then tie the ribbon around the ponytail (underneath the other holders) in a bow as tight as possible. This is extra protection to keep the cheer bow from sliding.

And lastly, we thought we would include some pictures of what our cheer bows should NOT look like.

It looks funny here, but we have seen this more times than we care to remember at competitions! Please feel free to contact us if you have questions. And thanks so much for your interest in Yella Ribbon Cheer Bows!
